Mom Gives Birth, But Dad’s Heart-Stopping Words Leave Her Speechless: “Something’s Wrong With His Leg”
Andrea West’s love story began in the final year of university, where she met the man who would soon become her husband. Their whirlwind romance led them to Andrea’s hometown, where their lives took off—engaged and soon expecting their first child. Andrea was on top of the world, eagerly anticipating the arrival of their little one.
But just 11 weeks in, joy turned into heartbreak. Andrea suffered a miscarriage, a devastating blow she could barely process. “I was lost,” she shared on Love What Matters. “I had no idea who to turn to, who to talk to, or how to heal. It’s something no one talks about, yet 1 in 4 women go through it. I wasn’t sure I’d ever feel ready to try again.”
With time, Andrea’s grief began to ease, thanks to the unwavering support of her husband. And soon, she found herself pregnant once more, filled with hope—and a determination to do everything right this time.
She cut out foods she loved—cold cuts, sushi, even cheeses she had once enjoyed. She devoured every pregnancy book she could find, vowing this time would be different. And when the day came, everything seemed perfect. She began to feel contractions at just the right moment, and they headed to the hospital, ready to welcome their baby boy into the world.
But things didn’t go as planned.
An ultrasound revealed something alarming: little to no amniotic fluid left. The doctors had no choice but to induce labor immediately.
Despite the sudden turn of events, the birth seemed to be progressing smoothly. By the end of the night, Andrea and her husband were holding their precious son, Adam. But before her husband could cut the umbilical cord, a flurry of medical staff rushed in. In a heartbeat, Adam was swept away.
Then, Andrea heard the words that would haunt her for hours: “There’s something wrong with Adam’s leg.”
In a blur of confusion and fear, Andrea’s husband caught a glimpse of their son, surrounded by doctors. The room was filled with worry and unanswered questions. Andrea, lying there, alone and frightened, had no idea what was happening to her baby.
The waiting felt endless.
Finally, doctors revealed the heartbreaking truth: the right side of Adam’s body, from his stomach to his leg, was marbled purple and black.
A diagnosis came soon after: Cutis Marmorata Telangiectatica Congenita (CMTC), a rare vascular malformation with fewer than 500 cases ever reported in the world.
Andrea and her husband were shaken, unsure how to process the news. The NICU became their new reality, where Adam underwent countless tests to check his vital organs. The stress and exhaustion were overwhelming—Andrea didn’t sleep for four days straight.
But Adam, the little fighter, proved everyone wrong. Against all odds, he thrived. He finally went home with a strict care plan, and as time passed, his true strength began to shine.
Today, Adam is a happy, healthy boy, excelling at math and chess. Despite his condition making his leg weaker than others, he plays sports and lives life to the fullest, never allowing his disability to define him.
Andrea is now deeply involved in the CMTC Alliance, working tirelessly to raise awareness for rare vascular malformations. She’s determined to help others facing the same struggles her son once did.
